The .NET Framework 4 is a runtime environment from Microsoft that apps for Windows, Windows Store, Windows Phone, Windows Server and Microsoft Azure require. In particular, Microsoft Office is dependent on the .NET Framework. This makes the Microsoft .NET Framework something similar to the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which Java programs need as a runtime environment. In addition to the .NET Framework for Windows, there is also .NET Core for Windows, Linux and macOS.
.NET in different versions
The .NET Framework was released by Microsoft in version 1.0 in January 2002 and has since been released in several major versions. These do not necessarily include the previous versions, so versions 3.5 must be installed in addition to version 4.x if Windows software lists the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 as a system requirement. This is different for the sub-versions of the Microsoft .NET Framework 4, for example, version 4.7 replaces its predecessors as an update. However, there are differences in the system requirements. While version 4.0 still supports Windows XP and Windows Vista, version 4.7 only starts with Windows 7. Those who still need the .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 must usually install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1), since versions 2.0 and 3.0 are included here.
Programming for .NET
The .NET Framework provides a runtime environment for Windows apps when using the C#, Visual Basic or F# programming languages for development. For writing source code, the system provides language and framework extensions. Included are several concepts to enforce policies for program security such as authentication, authorization, isolated storage and encryption. A fast-responding user interface and an addition of ASP.NET or Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), among others, complete the system.
Development environments
Windows software development for the .NET Framework is possible with Visual Studio and the freeware Visual Studio Express. The tools support various programming languages such as C#, Visual Basic, F# and C++. In addition to desktop programs, web development is possible with ASP.NET, Node.js and JavaScript.
.NET is open source
The .NET Foundation was founded in 2014 when Microsoft put the .NET system under an open source license. The foundation takes care of the open source projects around the Microsoft .NET Development Framework and provides a forum for the community and commercial developers. In addition to Microsoft Windows, the .NET Framework will be available for Linux, Mac OS X and FreeBSD. Until then, Mono will continue to be available as a freeware alternative for Linux.
Install .NET Framework 4
.NET Framework 4 runs on Windows versions Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, and Windows Server 2016. However, the sub-version matters here. While version 4.0 is available for Windows XP to Windows 7 and the corresponding server versions, version 4.7 is available for Windows 7 to Windows 10 and the corresponding server versions. As a download itself, Microsoft only offers the online installer via the download button, which downloads the necessary files over the Internet during the installation, so you have to have a fast Internet connection. Alternatively, there are standalone variants that contain all the files and can be installed offline. They are primarily available for Windows Server and can be found for download under the “Additional Information” item if they are offered, which varies depending on the sub-version. In particular, from Windows 7 and under Windows 10, the installation can be carried out online via the operating system. Under Windows 7, you have to click on “Activate or deactivate Windows functions” in the system settings under “Programs” and the following next window on the checkbox in front of Activate Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7. The situation is similar under Windows 10, where the path leads via “Settings > Apps > Programs and Features” in the Control Panel to the link “Activate or deactivate Windows functions”. In the window that opens, the checkbox in front of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 must also be activated. After clicking “OK”, the software is installed via the Internet. See also:

Windows 10 Home: Buy license key 70% cheaper! Short description You need the “Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0” runtime module to run applications programmed with .NET development tools. In version 4.0, the framework makes better use of multi-core processors in particular and uses your PC’s RAM sparingly. For many current Windows programs, this module is indispensable. Most of these programs offer to set up the required “.NET” version during installation. Not infrequently, however, this turns out to be outdated. For smooth parallel operation of all “.NET” programs, it is therefore recommended to manually install the latest version of the runtime environment in good time. Microsoft’s “.NET Framework 4.0” runtime is therefore a must for anyone using current Windows software. The main version 4.0 includes improvements to the “Common Language Runtime (CLR)” and base class library as well as optimized data access. Added are functions for parallel programming and an automatic garbage collection. 1, 2, 3, 4: Which .NET version does my PC need? Although the current “.NET Framework” theoretically includes everything that previous versions provided, it is not fully backward compatible. Some programs specifically require a certain version of the “.NET” runtime and will not accept a newer one. If you want to run such a program, there is usually no way around installing the appropriate (older) “.NET” variant. To avoid such problems from the beginning, it is best to install the previous editions of the “.NET” framework (including service packs and compatibility updates) in the order “from old to new”. .NET complete: All versions in one package It is much more convenient to bring all “.NET” components up to date by installing an update collection such as “All In One Runtimes”.
