Consumers can choose between different methods of water treatment. The most common are activated carbon filters, which are designed to filter out large organic particles. Visually, they resemble jugs in which the water drips through a cartridge. Ion exchangers and membrane processes are also used in private households. They filter ions or other unwanted substances from the water. Membrane filters work with the help of electric pumps and are only permeable to tiny molecules such as those in the water. Larger substances such as heavy metals, on the other hand, stick. As useful as these devices may seem at first glance, their benefits are controversial. Additional treatment in the household is “mostly superfluous,” according to the website of the consumer advice center. What’s more, if used incorrectly, the filters could even impair the quality of the water. How is this possible? We have compiled the most important facts that speak against the use of the filters.

Water is a highly sensitive food that spoils quickly. If filtered water remains in the container for a long time, germs can multiply in it. It is particularly critical if the filter cartridges are not replaced regularly. It is therefore essential to follow the operating instructions for the devices and to rinse and clean them regularly. If you want to be on the safe side, you should boil filtered water, advises the consumer advice center. This applies in particular to small children and immunocompromised persons. 2.

Again and again one reads of a high nitrate load of the groundwater. This is problematic, because nitrate is considered a potential carcinogen and is of particular concern for pregnant women and young children. The good news is that nitrate can be effectively filtered out of groundwater in waterworks. Various processes are available for this purpose. According to the Drinking Water Ordinance, drinking water must not exceed the maximum value of 50 milligrams of nitrate per liter. Limit values can be exceeded, but these days they are a rare exception. The same applies to contamination with bacteria or medicines: Their concentration in drinking water must be so low that there is no danger to the consumer – even with lifelong consumption.

3. the lead bluff – better to replace than to filter

Up to the water meter, the waterworks guarantee that the tap water is harmless. After that, the homeowner is responsible. It can happen that in houses built before 1973 there are still lead pipes. Lead levels increase if the water has been in the pipe overnight or for an extended period of time. If lead is suspected, consumers can have the water tested at a licensed testing laboratory. If lead does indeed pass into the tap water, the landlord or homeowner should be notified. It is then better to get to the root of the problem – and have the pipes replaced. Incidentally, the homeowner is also responsible for the hygienic maintenance of the pipes and must ensure that the pipes are free of bacteria such as legionella. For this purpose, he must have tests carried out by a specialist company at regular intervals. 4.

4 Nutrients also end up in the water filter

Membrane systems, also known as reverse osmosis systems, have the advantage that they effectively filter unwanted substances from the water, including nitrate, phosphate and heavy metals. Unfortunately, minerals also stick to the membrane. Consumer advocates therefore warn against long-term consumption of this water. Over time, the lack of minerals could lead to an undersupply.

5 And then there was the matter of lime.

Many people turn to filters because they want to remove lime from tap water. This is supposed to make tea and coffee taste better or reduce the amount of lime that settles in the coffee machine. The minerals magnesium and calcium are responsible for the white crusts. Lime may seem unappetizing at first glance – but it is not unhealthy. Some time ago, Stiftung Warentest tested how well common filters remove limescale from drinking water – with sobering results. Some models only managed to turn hard water into soft water for a short time. No cartridge retained this filter property until the end of the specified capacity. Three models tended to become germy. Another filter, the most expensive in the test, even released larger quantities of a harmful substance.
